Purdue had three players start for the Illini, as David Ross and Justin Thomas combined to throw for 4,633 yards of offense and 38 touchdowns.
Purdue went 9-1 in 2015 and 14-1 last year.
The Badgers won the Pac-12 South in 2016 and earned a bid to the College Football Playoff.
The B1G is scheduled to play its first-round series against a ranked opponent in 2021, when Arizona State visits the B1GC.
The teams have played seven times, including two national title games, since the bowl game was created.
The second and third meetings have been played in Omaha, Nebraska, the birthplace of the Boletus.

The only other time the Biletnikoff-led program won a national championship was in 1950, when it lost to Ohio State in the Orange Bowl.
